How we research and rank portable washing machines, and what we do not do.

1. What we compare

• Type: fully automatic, twin tub, all-in-one washer-dryer, portable dryer or manual washer.
• Hookups: how each machine fills (faucet adapter, hot and cold taps or by hand) and drains (pump or gravity), and what height the drain needs.
• Size and capacity: footprint, height with the lid open, weight and the brand’s own capacity rating.
• Power and safety: watts, outlet and circuit requirements, child locks and the warnings in each manual.

2. Where the information comes from

Brand specifications and owner’s manuals, guidance from ENERGY STAR, CPSC, ESFi, NFPA and Leave No Trace, and reviews from named publishers such as HGTV, NBC Select and BestReviews.

3. What we do not do

We do not run lab tests or claim to have used every product. We do not accept payment or free products for placement. We do not show prices, because they change every day; you see the current price on the product page.

4. Updates

We review our picks when a product is discontinued, redesigned or renamed, and when better evidence appears. Corrections are welcome at [email protected].
